During the past weeks, students from the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Thrace University visited several farms and zoos in Serbia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia. The purpose of the visits was practical training to upgrade their knowledge in the field of specifics in the feeding of different types of animals, qualities of the obtained products of an animal nature, examination of various autochthonous and meat-producing breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs, familiarization with the specifics of donkey milk. The head of the group was Dr. Rusko Petrov, a PhD student from the General Animal Husbandry Department of the Navy.
The training started with the largest donkey farm in Stara Planina in Serbia, which is located in Tsaribrod. Donkey milk has a sweet taste, contains more than 5% milk sugar and very little fat, making it dietary. With proper feeding and breeding, a female donkey can give 60-80 liters of milk per year.
The next stop of the tour was at BOA FARM Austria - a farm with which Thrace University partners. The farm specializes in the production of Aberdeen Angus cattle and Schwäbisch Hällische Landschwein (old German breed) and Duroc pigs. The crossbred pig has great mothering ability of SHL dams and the Duroc brings great marbling to the breed. The breeds are distinguished by high-quality meat.
Training took place in Szeged Zoo, Hungary and Prague Zoo, Záchranná stanice pro živočiné živočichy Huslík Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center, Záchranná stanice pro živočichyr, Hodonin Zoo, Czech Republic and Haringsee Bird of Prey Breeding Center , Austria. The students had the opportunity to get up close and personal with their different, old and local breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs. Their specifics in feeding and growing. In all the zoos and Rescue Centers, there were lectures on the specifics of feeding and rearing white-spined kestrels, peregrine falcons and scavengers.
The students also had the opportunity to participate in patient examinations in one of the largest clinics for wild and exotic birds in the Czech Republic - Veterinary clinic Mada, Kralupy nad Vltavou together with Dr. Tereza Zahalkova, PhD student at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU )
The training ended back in Serbia with the Workshop "The return of vultures to Stara Planina" Serbia, where the team delivered a lecture on: Captive breeding Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vultures (Neophron percnopterus), Cinereous Vultures (Aegypius monachus) and Bearded Vultures ( Gypaetus barbatus).
